How Long Should a Wedding Speech Be? Minutes and Word Counts, Measured

Three to five minutes, seven at the most, and what that is in words at the pace real speakers use.

A wedding speech should run three to five minutes, with five as the target and seven as the ceiling for anyone. That is roughly 350 to 650 words, depending on how fast you talk. We measured the pace of 25 recorded speeches: the median was 117 words per minute counting pauses and 130 words per minute counting only the time the speaker was actually talking, so three minutes is about 350 words, five minutes is about 585 and seven minutes is about 820. Aim for the lower end of each range, because a wedding adds laughter, a toast and a microphone, and a speech delivers about a third longer than it reads. The maid of honour and the bride usually run two to four minutes, and the whole speeches block should finish inside twenty minutes. Time yours out loud, not on the page.

How many words is a wedding speech?

Minutes are what the room feels and words are what you write, so you need both. The table multiplies each length by the three paces we measured: the slower quarter of speakers (102 words per minute with pauses), the median (117), and the median pace while actually speaking (130).

Why the page count lies

Every wedding speech delivers about a third longer than it reads. Laughter, the pause after each joke, the toast and the handover of the microphone all take time that does not appear in a word count. A speech that reads as four minutes in your head runs to five and a half in the room. So the order of work is: write to the word count above, then time it out loud standing up, then cut until the timed run lands inside your range. Do not speed up to fit; the speakers we measured paused about every four seconds, and a wedding audience needs the gaps more than most.

How to time yours

  1. 1. Read it aloud once, standing, with a phone timer running and a prop at mouth height for the microphone. Do not stop for mistakes.
  2. 2. Add what the room will add. Two seconds for every joke you expect a laugh from, five for the toast. A speech with six jokes needs about 15 seconds of laughter allowance.
  3. 3. Check your pace. Words divided by minutes. Under about 100 and you are dragging; over about 145 and you are rushing. The speaking rate calculator does the sum.
  4. 4. Cut a story, not a sentence, if you are over. Trimming every line leaves a speech full of half-jokes.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a wedding speech be?

Three to five minutes for the father of the bride, the groom and the best man; two to four for the maid of honour or the bride. Seven minutes is the ceiling for anyone, because the speeches block as a whole should finish inside twenty minutes and the last speaker is the one who pays for overrunning. Time it out loud with the pauses in, because laughter, the toast and the microphone make a speech deliver about a third longer than it reads on the page.

How many words is a 5-minute wedding speech?

About 500 to 650 words. We measured 25 public-domain recorded speeches: the median pace was 117 words per minute counting pauses and 130 words per minute counting only the time the speaker was talking, so five minutes is roughly 585 to 650 words. A wedding adds laughter and a toast, so aim for the lower end, about 500 to 550 words, and time it out loud to confirm.

How many words is a 3-minute speech?

About 300 to 390 words. At the median pace we measured, 117 words per minute with pauses, three minutes is 351 words; at the 130 words per minute median speaking pace it is 390. A slower speaker, in the bottom quarter of the speeches we measured at 102 words per minute, would get through about 306.

Is 10 minutes too long for a wedding speech?

Yes. Ten minutes is more than double the five-minute target and is roughly 1,170 words at a normal pace. Guests have usually sat through two other speeches by the time the best man stands up, and attention ends at about twenty minutes for the whole block, however good the material is. If you are over seven minutes, cut a story rather than speed up.

Key takeaways

  • Three to five minutes for the father of the bride, groom and best man; two to four for the maid of honour or bride; seven is the ceiling.
  • About 350 words is three minutes and 585 is five, at the median pace of 117 words per minute we measured.
  • The whole speeches block finishes inside twenty minutes.
  • Time it out loud, standing, with the laughter allowance; it delivers a third longer than it reads.
  • Over length? Cut a story, do not speed up.
