Best AI Tools to Practise Difficult Conversations

The best AI tool for practising a difficult conversation at work depends on whether you need a partner that argues back or a coach that tells you how you sounded. Careertrainer.ai and VoicePrep are the best roleplay partners an individual manager can buy; Second Nature, Virti and Skillsoft CAISY do the same for organisations. EchoPitch is the best delivery coach, scoring clarity, pace, empathy signals and composure on a recording of you saying the hard thing, across seventeen scenarios from feedback to termination. ChatGPT in voice mode is a free first pass. Most managers already know the words and lose the room on delivery.

Quick answer

Choose an AI tool for difficult conversations by which half of the conversation you are afraid of. If it is the other person's reaction, you need a roleplay partner that pushes back: Careertrainer.ai and VoicePrep sell to individuals from about €15 and $5 a month, and Second Nature, Virti and Skillsoft CAISY play the same role inside enterprise training. If it is your own composure, because you know the three sentences you must say and cannot get through them without rushing or hedging, you need a delivery coach, and EchoPitch scores exactly that from a recording across seventeen workplace scenarios. ChatGPT in voice mode is a free way to find the words and a poor way to find out how you said them, because it agrees too easily and keeps no score. Whichever you choose, practise the situation and never enter the real employee's details.

What counts here

A tool qualifies if it lets a manager, HR partner or professional rehearse a hard workplace conversation out loud and get feedback. That covers AI roleplay partners, delivery coaches, enterprise simulators and, because it is what most people actually use first, a general assistant in voice mode. The eight are compared on what kind of tool they are, which scenarios they cover, what the feedback consists of, who is allowed to buy them and price. Prices were read on each vendor's site in September 2026. The scenarios themselves, with prompts for each, are on the difficult conversations practice hub.

Each tool in detail

1. EchoPitch

Best for composure

Managers who know what to say and lose their composure saying it

$12.99 for 5 sessions
Kind: Delivery coach: record the conversation against a scenario prompt, freestyle or with a prepared sequence
Scenarios: 17 scenarios including difficult feedback, termination, disciplinary, salary negotiation, resignation, breaking bad news, saying no and workplace apology
Feedback: Scores clarity, pacing, filler words, empathy signals and composure from voice and face, with timestamped moments

The only tool here that scores how you came across rather than what you said. It does not argue back, so if you need to drill responses to unpredictable pushback, pair it with a roleplay tool for that piece.

2. Careertrainer.ai

EU managers who want a roleplay partner with data held in Germany

3 free conversations a month; from €14.99/mo
Kind: Voice roleplay in the browser; a second AI evaluates the conversation afterwards
Scenarios: 50+ scenarios across feedback, criticism, conflict and negotiation, plus custom scenarios from a text description
Feedback: Scores with quoted moments from the conversation; team dashboards without transcript access

The best self-serve roleplay partner on the list, and the clearest data story. German-first product, so check the English scenarios fit your context.

3. VoicePrep

The cheapest self-serve roleplay for a manager

3 free sessions; Pro $4.99/mo; Hiring Manager $29/mo; L&D from $299/mo
Kind: Avatar roleplays with a voice mode; web only
Scenarios: Employee feedback, layoffs, conflict and interviews; difficult-conversation training sits in the Hiring Manager tier
Feedback: Filler-word detection in voice mode; coach mode gives L&D visibility of manager practice

Very cheap at the bottom and confusing at the top, with nine plans and minute quotas on team tiers. Little independent coverage yet.

4. Second Nature

Large organisations already buying sales roleplay who want HR scenarios too

Not published
Kind: Video-avatar roleplay with real-time behavioural flags; SCORM, LTI and SAML
Scenarios: Sales-first, extended to conflict resolution and mediation; 30+ languages
Feedback: Consistent scoring across reps; manager dashboards

Polished and proven at scale. Priced and packaged as sales enablement, so an HR team buying it alone is paying for a sales platform.

5. Virti

L&D teams building leadership scenarios, with optional VR

Enterprise from $25,000/yr
Kind: No-code scenario builder; spoken two-way roleplay with AI virtual humans on web, mobile or headset
Scenarios: Difficult conversations, performance reviews, healthcare and sales, all authored by your team
Feedback: Empathy, clarity and confidence scores; xAPI into Workday, Cornerstone and SuccessFactors

The most flexible simulation platform for a programme. Not available to an individual manager, and the price starts where most budgets end.

EchoPitch vs Virti

6. Skillsoft CAISY

Companies already on Skillsoft Percipio

Bundled with Skillsoft
Kind: Conversation AI Simulator inside Percipio, with a role-model mode
Scenarios: Pre-built: coaching, conflict resolution, HR discussions, negotiation, complaints; up to 20 turns per simulation
Feedback: Novice-to-advanced scoring, weighted 70% on whether you achieved the objective

Good if it is already in your LMS and invisible if it is not. Pre-built scenarios only, with no custom authoring noted in the documentation.

7. Skill Lake

Organisations that want one LMS with roleplay bundled

Not published
Kind: LMS with a built-in AI roleplay feature
Scenarios: Custom scenarios authored by L&D; personas such as difficult customers and demanding managers
Feedback: Feedback on style, content and tone; skill-gap insights for managers

Sensible if you are shopping for an LMS anyway. The roleplay is not sold on its own and there is no trial.

8. ChatGPT or Claude voice mode

A free first pass to find out what you want to say

Free tiers; paid plans around $20/mo
Kind: General assistant prompted to play the other person; full-duplex voice since 2026
Scenarios: Anything you can describe in a sentence
Feedback: None structured; you can ask for a critique afterwards

Better than rehearsing in your head and worse than every dedicated tool at telling you how you did. Too agreeable, no scoring, no record of progress.

How to choose

Three questions settle it for most managers.

Are you afraid of their reaction, or of your own delivery?

If you cannot predict what they will say, drill it with a roleplay partner. If you know exactly what they will say and still dread saying your part, the problem is delivery and only a delivery coach measures it. Most managers who think they need the first actually need the second.

Is this one conversation or a programme?

For the meeting on Monday, buy something you can use tonight: Careertrainer, VoicePrep or EchoPitch. For two hundred managers, the enterprise simulators earn their price with dashboards and LMS reporting.

Where do the recordings go?

You are rehearsing a real situation about a real person. Check hosting, retention and whether recordings train the vendor's models before you check the feature list, and never enter the employee's name or file.

Scenario-by-scenario guidance is on the practice pages: difficult feedback, termination, salary negotiation, saying no, and the rest on the hub.

Difficult conversation tools FAQ

What is the best AI tool to practise difficult conversations with employees?

It depends on whether your problem is what to say or how it comes out. If you need a counterpart that argues back so you can drill responses to pushback, Careertrainer.ai and VoicePrep are the best self-serve roleplay tools an individual manager can buy, and Second Nature, Virti and Skillsoft CAISY do the same at enterprise scale. If you already know what you need to say and lose your composure saying it, EchoPitch is the best delivery coach: you record the conversation against a scenario prompt and it scores clarity, pacing, empathy signals and composure, which are what the employee will actually notice. Many managers use one of each.

Can I just use ChatGPT to practise a difficult conversation?

Yes, and for a first pass it is a reasonable option. Ask it in voice mode to play a defensive direct report who missed a deadline and talk it through; the 2026 full-duplex voice models handle interruptions well enough to feel like a conversation. The limits reviewers keep finding are that the model is too agreeable and folds too easily, there is no scoring or record of whether you improved, and each session is ad hoc. It is a good way to find out what you want to say and a poor way to find out how you sounded saying it.

What is the difference between a roleplay tool and a delivery coach?

A roleplay tool plays the other person and responds to what you say, so you practise the content of the conversation: the opening, the answer to the objection, the next question. A delivery coach records you and scores how you sounded: pace, fillers, hedging, empathy signals, composure when the subject is hard. Careertrainer, VoicePrep, Second Nature, Virti and CAISY are roleplay tools; EchoPitch is a delivery coach. Most people already know the words and lose the room on delivery, which is why the delivery read is usually the faster fix, but if the pushback is unpredictable the roleplay tool is the right one for that piece.

Which of these can an individual manager buy?

VoicePrep, Careertrainer.ai and EchoPitch sell to individuals. VoicePrep has three free sessions and plans from $4.99 a month, with difficult-conversation training in its $29 a month Hiring Manager tier. Careertrainer gives three free conversations a month and charges from €14.99 a month. EchoPitch is five scored sessions for £9.99 across seventeen conversation scenarios, shown in local currency outside the UK. Second Nature, Virti, Skillsoft CAISY and Skill Lake are sold to organisations, usually through L&D.

How should I practise a termination or disciplinary conversation?

Write the three sentences you must say, in order, and practise those rather than the whole meeting: the decision, the reason, and what happens next. Say them out loud standing up, record it, and listen for the two things employees report noticing most, which are a rushed opening and hedging language that makes the decision sound negotiable. Then rehearse the one response you are most afraid of, whether tears, anger or silence, and your first sentence after it. Three recorded passes is enough; more than that produces a script, and a script reads as cold. Our termination conversation practice page has the scenario prompts.

Is it appropriate to practise a real employee conversation with an AI tool?

Yes, provided you do not put the employee's personal details into it. Practise the situation, not the person: a defensive direct report who missed two deadlines, not a named colleague and their performance file. Check where the tool stores recordings and whether they train the vendor's models; Careertrainer hosts in Germany and gives team dashboards no transcript access, Yoodli excludes data from training only on its Advanced plan, and EchoPitch is GDPR compliant with recordings under your control. For HR teams, that data question should decide the shortlist before the feature list does.
